Monks, artisans and a “skeleton in the cellar”
A guided tour of Oberwesel’s former Minorite monastery

One of medieval Oberwesel’s best-kept secrets is the former Minorite monastery. The ruined monastery church is the town’s oldest religious building. Gradually, over the centuries, a truly remarkable piece of urban development took shape here, tucked away near the Oberstrasse. After the monastery was destroyed by fire in 1836, local residents built small houses and workshops in the remains of the walls. Despite major rebuilding, the cloistered walk, nave and several monastery buildings are all still recognizable today, giving the group of houses its own very special charm.

During the tour, visitors will learn about the monastery’s chequered history. They will have the chance to enter areas not normally open to the public, such as the monastery gardens and the former chapter house and be able to experience Oberwesel’s most unusual district with its winding passages and alleyways from a surprisingly new perspective. The group will discover what happened during the monastery’s turbulent, 800 year history and find out who, literally, still has “a skeleton in the cellar”. And there are plenty of curiosities and anecdotes to spice up the historical facts. This fascinating tour is rounded off with a glass of original monastery schnapps, served in a medieval vaulted cellar.
